Once in a while we do actually feature some real news - and serious news at that!!! And just to compound this landmark event, its not even about playing bingo online, but more to do with its offline sister!
Today, we report from Harlow where the local Mecca Bingo hall is taking a dramatic stand against the governement and asking it to put a stop to what Mecca calls “unfair” taxaton of the bingo halls profits - currently the bingo room pays a gross profits tax of 15% plus VAT - the result of which means the bingo hall is struggling to stay in the black!
Obviously, such taxation has a massive effect on our more traditional Bingo halls than it does on its online bingo counterparts, as they have the added cost and burden of property and staffing. All this in an industry which has been hit by the smoking ban, and lets face it, the ability people now have to play bingo online.
Although it is the Mecca Bingo in Harlows stance which has taken the news, it is actually a problem faced by all Bingo premises - in a strange ruling, Bingo clubs face this secondary taxation, whilst Casino and gambing premises have escaped it.
The Harlow Mecca Bingo club has an impressive 40,0000 members, a number some online rooms would be proud to boast, but the actual paying visitors is dwindling month on month. A spokesperson for the club said :
“We want the government to help reduce the strain on our business by removing the extra financial burden of this unfair Gross Profits tax - no other gambling business has to pay it so why should we?
“This club plays a pivotal role in the local community, and it would be a major blow to our thousands of members if we were forced to close.”
Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate Robert Halfon has given his support to the club’s cause, and has now launched a local petition to lift the “unfair” second tax.
“Harlow Bingo Club is an amazing place and is a real community institution,” he said. “Thousands of Harlow residents are members.
“Already, with the Government’s smoking ban, numbers have fallen. If the Government persists in taxing the club twice numbers will fall even further.”

Never ones to shy away from controversy, we were discussing how the bad weather could actually be good for anyone who likes to play bingo online!!
The pro’s were something like this - weather is bad means i have to stay inside - if I HAVE to stay inside, I may as well play bingo online, as what else is there to do!
Pretty simple logic I guess! However, some of the debating team ( me, editor, and coffee gopher ) were of the opinion that this bad weather could not be good for anything - not even playing bingo online!! Now I understand this argument partly, and to all those people who have suffered as a result of the weather I wholeheartedly apologise in advance, but I have a positive outlook on life and everything that goes with it, and if faced with something adverse, like 80mph gale force winds, and lashings of rain which prevent me from doing anything other than sit in front of the laptop - then I like to think i can turn that into a positive experience - and playing bingo is definitely a positive experience where I’m concerned!!
Funnily enough I was just on Sun Bingo debating this issue even further - and one thing did come up which I have to concede could be classed as a downside in this weather - picking kids up from school!
